చంద్రుడు మఘ నక్షత్రాన ఉండే మాసం మాఘం. 'మఘం' అంటే యజ్ఞం. యజ్ఞయాగాది క్రతువులకు మాఘమాసాన్ని శ్రేష్ఠమైనదిగా భావించేవారు. ఈ మఘాధిపత్యాన క్రతువులు జరిగే మాసం గనుక మాఘమాసమైంది.
